Can Hearing Loss Be Reversed? What Can Be Treated and What Can’t

Oct 09, 2026

The short answer is: sometimes. It depends on what is causing it.

Some hearing loss can be fixed. Some can’t. The first step is finding out which kind you have.

The two main types of hearing loss

Hearing loss usually falls into one of two groups.

Conductive hearing loss happens when sound can’t travel through the outer or middle ear. Think of it as a blockage or a problem with the parts that carry sound.

Common causes include:

  • Ear wax build-up
  • Fluid behind the eardrum
  • Ear infections
  • A hole or damage in the eardrum

Sensorineural hearing loss happens when the inner ear or the hearing nerve is damaged. The sound gets in, but the signal isn’t sent to the brain clearly.

Common causes include:

  • Getting older
  • Long-term loud noise
  • Some illnesses and medicines
  • Genes passed down in families

Some people have both types at once. This is called mixed hearing loss.

Hearing loss that can often be treated

Conductive hearing loss is the type most likely to improve. Once the cause is dealt with, hearing often returns.

Ear wax. This is one of the most common reasons for muffled hearing. When the wax is removed safely, hearing can improve straight away. Avoid cotton buds, as they can push wax deeper. A clinic can remove it for you with microsuction ear wax removal.

Fluid and ear infections. Many clear up with time or with treatment from your GP. Hearing often comes back once the fluid drains or the infection settles.

Eardrum damage. Some small holes heal on their own. Others may need help from an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist.

The key point is this. If your hearing feels blocked or muffled, don’t just wait and hope. A simple check can show whether the cause is something fixable.

Hearing loss that usually can’t be reversed

Sensorineural hearing loss is usually permanent. The tiny hair cells inside the inner ear don’t grow back once they are damaged.

This is why age-related hearing loss and noise damage tend to stay with you.

That doesn’t mean nothing can be done. It means the goal changes from fixing the hearing to managing it well.

Hearing aids don’t cure hearing loss. But they make sounds clearer and easier to follow. They also help you pick up more of the sounds around you. Many people find conversations, TV and group settings much easier once their hearing aids are set up properly.

Sudden hearing loss is different

If your hearing drops suddenly, treat it as urgent. This is especially true if it happens in one ear.

See a doctor straight away. Treatment tends to work best when it starts early.

How to protect the hearing you have

You can’t always reverse hearing loss. But you can often stop it from getting worse.

  • Turn the volume down. This goes for headphones, TVs and speakers.
  • Use ear protection around loud noise. Work sites, concerts and power tools can all damage hearing over time. Custom ear plugs are made to fit your ears.
  • Give your ears a break. Step away from loud places when you can.
  • Don’t poke things in your ears. This includes cotton buds and keys.
  • Get infections checked. Don’t leave ear pain or discharge for weeks.
  • Test your hearing regularly. Changes are easier to catch early. See our age-based guide on how often to get your hearing tested.

Signs it’s time for a hearing test

Book a test if you notice any of these:

  • People seem to mumble
  • You often ask others to repeat themselves
  • You turn the TV up louder than others do
  • Group chats and noisy rooms are hard to follow
  • Your ears feel blocked or muffled
  • You have ringing or buzzing in your ears

Common questions

Can hearing come back on its own?

Sometimes, if the cause is temporary. Blocked ears from wax, fluid or a cold often clear up. Permanent inner ear damage does not come back on its own.

Can hearing loss from loud noise be reversed?

Usually not. Noise can damage the inner ear for good. But short-term dullness after a loud event can sometimes settle. If it doesn’t, get your hearing checked.

Is hearing loss genetic?

It can be. Some people inherit a higher chance of hearing loss. But many cases are caused by age, noise or illness instead.

Can hearing aids reverse hearing loss?

No. They don’t repair the ear. They make sound clearer and louder so you can hear and understand better.

What are the degrees of hearing loss?

Hearing loss is usually described as mild, moderate, severe or profound. A hearing test shows which level applies to you.

Find out what’s causing your hearing loss

You can’t tell the type of hearing loss just by how it feels. A proper hearing test is the only way to know.
